COMMUNITY CLOTHES CHARITY 2011 ANNUAL SALE
For Immediate Release October, 2011 Held only once a year, this popular event not only draws fashion-loving shoppers from the local area, but also as far away as Washington, NYC and Connecticut, and even from Europe. With past recipients as diverse as Dragonfly Forest, Bryn Mawr Hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Center, and HMS School for Children with Cerebral Palsy, the CCC has had a large impact on Philadelphia and the Main Line during its 34-year history.
The significant amount of money raised by this annual sale goes to a different worthy charity each year. In the past ten years alone, the group has donated over $1.6M to local beneficiaries. Last year, the record- breaking $220,000 profit went to Dog Tags, the inspiring Puppies Behind Bars program that provides prison-trained service dogs free of charge to physically and psychologically wounded veterans returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
This year a major portion of the funds raised will go to Need in Deed (NID), an educational non-profit that uses the classroom to prepare young people for civic responsibility and service to others. This enables them to become capable, contributing members of the community. Working with 3rd through 8th grade classes in Philadelphia’s public, charter and independent schools, NID trains and supports teachers as they adopt a teaching and learning strategy known as service learning. NID impacts the lives of 1600 students a year through their yearlong training and support of teachers in under-resourced schools. Students who participate in NID projects demonstrate greater concern for others, greater rapport with their teachers, decreased discipline incidents and improved math and reading test scores. For more information, contact Barbara Dundon, NID Executive Director at: barbara@needindeed.org or go to: www.needindeed.org.
The balance of the proceeds will go to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to support their Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center which is one of the largest, most renowned centers for children and adolescents living with SCD and has exciting research programs to develop new treatments and cures. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited disorder among African-Americans affecting 1 in 375 births. There are currently more than 100,000 individuals with SCD in the United States alone and many millions worldwide. The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at CHOP is one of the largest, most renowned centers for children and adolescents living with SCD and has one of the most exciting research programs to develop new treatments and cures. The CCC annual sale features famous labels such as Chanel, Armani, Ferragamo, St. John, Escada, and other designer names that attract savvy women interested in couture and high fashion. Many other well-known popular labels are also well represented among the large selection of coats, suits, dresses, evening gowns, and sportswear that will all be marked down to a fraction of their original cost.
